General Electric (GE: 10.70*, +0.05, +0.46%)
Report date: April 17
Estimated Quarterly EPS: 21 cents
Year-Ago EPS: 44 cents
Change: -52%
Jeffrey Immelt, chief executive of this bluest of blue chips, started his annual letter to shareholders by saying that "2008 was a tough year, and we expect 2009 to be even tougher." That certainly appears to be the case so far, as analysts expect GE's earnings to fall by more than half from the year-ago period. As a conglomerate with its hands in so many sectors -- from industrials to financials -- an improvement in GE's fortunes and its outlook sends a strong signal about the prospects for the broad economy. The bad news? GE stopped giving guidance in December and the future of its financial operations is cloudier than ever. Furthermore, its whopping 11% dividend yield could actually be a sign of distress.
